I.E. Rules and General Rules for Wiring L.V. and
M.V.Installations:
The relevent I.E. Rules to be complied with and standard
practices to be followed for wiring of single phase (240 Volt) and three phase
(415 Volt) installation are given below:
1. The cable and apparatus used are to be of sufficient
rating and to conformto elevent Indian Standard specifications. (Rule 29).
2 Electrical installations are to be carried out only by a
licensed electrical contractor (Rule 45)
3. A suitable linked switch with fuses or a circuit breaker
is to be placed at the point of commencement of the supply in a readily
accessible place which can be easily operated (Rule 50)
4. Every individual circuit is to be protected against
excess current by means of a suitable-fuse, switch or circuit breaker (Rule
50).
5. No fuses or
switches (other than a linked switch) are to be placed on the earthed neutral
conductor (Rule 32).
6. All conductors of 3-phase, 415-V installation are to be
enclosed in metal conduit or rigid PVC conduit All metal coverings are to be
earthed (Rule 51).
7. All metal casing or covering of electric line or
apparatus are to be earthed In case of 240-V installation isolated metal
fittings may not be earthed. All 415-V motor and their controlling apparatus
are to be earthed by two separate and distinct connection with earth (Rule 61).
8. All 3-phase 415-V installations and single phase 240-V
installations of load 5 kW and above are to controlled by a LCCB (Rule 61A)
9. The light and fan sub-circuits are to be kept separate
from the power sub-circuits.
10. All main switches are to be of metal clad enclosed type
or of insulated enclosed type.
11. All distribution boards with fuse or M.C.Bs are also to
be metal enclosed type or insulated enclosed type. Each DB. should be
controlled by a controlling switch or M.C.B. Each D.B. should have at least one
spare way.
12. All sockets are to be of 3-pin type and third pin of the
socket to be
connected to earth. All sockets are to be controlled by
individual switches
13 Only 15-A, 3-pin
type socket is used for power circuit. For domestic and and commercial
installations it should have its own fuse besides the control switch.
14. The load in each light and fan sub-circuit is to be
restricted to 800 watts, 10 points.
15. The load in each
power sub-circuit is to be restricted to 3000 watts. Not more than two socket
outlets to be connected in a power sub-circuit.
16.The main switch and other switches are to be installed at
a height of 1.5m from the floor.
17.For domestic installation lamps should normally be at
height of 2.5 m and ceiling fans at a height of 2.75 m.
18. The insulation
resistance of the completed installation is to be measured with a 500-V meggar
for one minute. The insulation resistance should be at least 1 meg-ohm (Rule
48)
