Aim: ✓✓To familiar about batten wiring system with
load connection in domestic applications.
✓✓Prepare wiring
installation on a board showing control of one lamp, one fan and one socket
from one switch board using batten conduit wiring system.
Theory:
This system of wiring is suitable for low pressure (upto 250
volts) installation. This is specially suited for places where acid or alkali
fumes are likely to be present. This is extensively used for lighting
installation, residential, commercial or industrial excepting workshops.
Here the circuit
consists of one lamp, one fan and one socket from one switch
board.
In this type of wiring PVC cables, single core or twin-core,
are used on teak wood battens of at least 10mm thick. The width of the batten
depends on the number and size of cables used. The available sizes are 13 mm.
(for one 1.5 sq mm. twin core or two single core cables), 19 mm, 25 mm. etc.
The T.W. battens are fixed on walls with wood or PVC plugs and wood screws at
intervals not exceeding 75 cm. PVC cables are run on the battens and fixed to
the battens with the help of link and clips already fixed on the battens with
brass pins or iron nails.
Extra note:
According to IS.S., the following points are to be observed
when installing batten wiring:
(1)
TW. battens shall be at least of 10 mm thick and
of suitable width to accomodate all the cables.
(2)
(ii) These battens are to be fixed on walls or
ceilings by flat head wood screws to wood or other plugs at an interval not
exceeding 75 cm.
(3)
Link
clips shall be so arranged that one single clip is not to hold more than two
twin-core or four single core cables. These clips are fixed on wood battens
with brass pins or iron nails and are to be spaced at an interval of 10 cm in
the case of horizontal run and 15 cm in case of vertical run
(4)
In case
of any chance of the wiring being damaged, such wiring is to be covered with sheet metal protective covering
or to be drawn through heavy gauge metal conduit. Wooden bushes are to be
provided at the end of conduits
(5)
While passing through floors or walls, porcelain
tubes are to be used.
(6)
The wires
must not be bent to a radius less than six times the overall the cable.
(7)
The ends of the cable must be sealed in
compounds in damp situations.
(8)
The wiring shall, after erection, be painted
with one coat of oil-less point

Precaution:
√√Connect the
circuit as directed by the guide
√√ Use predefined wire size for the
assigned load.
√√Earthing connection should be used for load
starting from energy meter.
√√For light, fan and heating loads the fuse rating is not to be less than the total load
currents of the circuit.
√√Minimum size of battenof at least 10 mm thick
Can not be used in places
exposed to sun and rain.
